UPDATE: 4 dead, 12 wounded in overnight heat (violence)


Four people are dead and at least 12 others were wounded in overnight shooting incidents in Chicago, police said.

The first death was a little before 1 a.m. in the Gresham neighborhood. Three men were shot -- one fatally -- in the 8400 block of South Seeley Avenue, police said, as an attacker approached the three and fired shots with a assault rifle.

Lionel Rattler, 35, was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. at Christ, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. One man was shot in his back and fell and hit his head, police said. Another man suffered gunshot wounds to his legs. They were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The second fatality was at 2:13 a.m. in the Albany Park neighborhood. Police received calls of shots fired and found a man shot multiple times in an alley in the 3400 block of West Irving Park Road, police said. He was identified as Devjuea Crittenden, 20, of the 6400 block of South Claremont, a medical examiner's spokeswoman said. Crittenden was at a party with friends when he was shot, officials said.

At 2:34 a.m. in the Burnside neighborhood, a 45-year-old man was found shot to death in a Cadillac in front of his house in the 700 block of East 89th Street, police said. The victim was identified as Henry Tellis, the medical examiner's spokeswoman said. He was found in a passenger seat with a gunshot wound to his left chest, officials said.

At 4:15 a.m., three people were shot -- one fatally -- in front of a residence in the 6400 block of South Bishop Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. Two male attackers approached the three and fired shots before fleeing, according to a separate release from the police.

A 42-year-old woman was fatally shot in her abdomen and back, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak. She was initially listed in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A 20-year-old woman was shot in her arm and in good condition at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center. A 43-year-old man was shot in the leg but refused medical attention, the release said.

At least eight other people were wounded in overnight shootings, officials said.

At 9:18 p.m. Friday, a 28-year-old man was critically shot in his head and back as he was walking in the 4200 block of South Lake Shore Drive, according to a release from police News Affairs. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

At 10:50 p.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 3900 block of West Van Buren Street, a release said. He was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, according to a Fire Media Affairs spokesman.

About 11 p.m. in the Englewood neighborhood, two men were playing dice in the 6500 block of South Justine Street when an attacker emerged from a gangway and fired shots, wounding both of them, a release said. A 22-year-old man was shot in his back and buttocks and a 24-year-old man was shot in the hand. One was taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and another went to Holy Cross Hospital, the Fire Media Affairs spokesman said.

At 11:06 p.m. in the Gresham neighborhood, two men were outside standing at a corner in the 7900 block of South Laflin Street when they were shot. A 25-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to his back and was listed in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and a 29-year-old man was shot in his thigh and was listed in stable at Stroger, the release said.

At 2:07 a.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police found a 26-year-old man shot on the sidewalk in the 5100 block of South Wood Street, the release said. He was listed in stable condition at Stroger.

At 3:05 a.m. in the Avalon Park neighborhood, a man was shot in the back in the 8100 block of South Avalon Avenue, police said. No information was available about his conmdition.

No one was in custody for any incident and area detectives were investigating.
