Deaths of 2 in Northwest Side crash ruled homicides
The deaths of two members of a late-night cleaning crew killed in a crash as they drove home have been ruled homicides, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The dead were identified as Franciszek Opiela, 57, of the 7800 block West Sunset Drive in Elmwood Park, and Teresa Cygan, 57, of the 100 block of Cambridge Avenue in Streamwood. Both were pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center shortly after their beige Hyundai crashed into a wall of a check-cashing store at 4400 W. Diversey Ave. at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
Two cars were involved -- the Hyundai and a black Honda. The Honda hit a street light and both cars hit the building, police said.
Autopsies Monday found that both Opiela and Cygan died of multiple injuries as a result of "pursued motor vehicle striking automobile," the medical examiner's office said.
A homicide ruling indicates that a death was caused by another person, but it is not an indication of criminal culpability.
The details of the crash were not clear, and Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti, a police spokeswoman, refused to provide information, saying only that the incident was under investigation by Grand Central Area detectives and the police Major Accident Investigation Unit.
Two people from the Honda were taken to Illinois Masonic, while another two occupants were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
