Uncle released in nephew's hit-run death
The man who killed his toddler nephew by driving over him with his SUV has been released without charges, Aurora police said today.
Although police say they are continuing to investigate the weekend incident, the 21-year-old man was released Monday, the same day he turned himself in to police for questioning in the death of 15-month-old Jared Pichardo.
“At this time, the incident appears to be accidental in nature,” Aurora City Public Information Director Dan Ferrelli said in a statement released Tuesday.
The child was killed late Saturday afternoon when his uncle backed over him with his 2002 Ford Explorer in the driveway of the residence in the 400 block of Hinman Avenue where both lived.
The uncle fled the scene, though he remained in Aurora, police said. A family member spoke with him on the phone Monday and convinced him to meet with police to answer questions.
“He apparently fled because he panicked and is obviously distraught over the loss of his nephew,” Ferrelli said.
