Chicago Cops: Man shot after pointing gun at police

A man was hospitalized this morning after being shot by Chicago police after he pointed a gun at officers in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.

The incident began at about 1 a.m. when police received a call of a man with a gun in the area around the 6700 block of South Halsted Street, police said in a statement.

After receiving the description of the man and the vehicle he was in, police noticed a vehicle matching the description and tried to pull it over but the driver refused to stop, police said.

On the 6200 block of South Peoria, the man exited from the passenger side of the vehicle with a gun in his hand, police said. When officers approached on foot, the man then pointed the weapon toward the police, according to the statement.

Police responded by shooting their weapons at the man, hitting him, police said. The man was taken to an area hospital where his condition was not known, officials said.

A weapon was recovered at the scene. No police officers were injured, according to the statement.

The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, officials said.
