DSLC BLACK CRIME NEWS REPORT FOR CHICAGO

3 arrested after shots fired near school

Responding to a call of shots fired near a West Pullman neighborhood elementary school Wednesday afternoon, police arrested a 15-year-old gang member who was subsequently charged with several gun violations.

But police said they could not confirm a published report that said officers at the scene found 31 spent shell casings near the school. School was in session at the time, but no one was hurt.

The teen was found in possession of a handgun in the vicinity of the Songhai Learning Institute, 11725 S. Perry Ave., police said. He was charged with unlawful use of a firearm by a street gang member, possession of a stolen firearm and failure to have a FOID card and gun permit.

Two other suspects in the teen's company also were charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct. One was a 15-year-old. The other was Joseph Weatherspoon, 21, of the 5200 block of West Adams Street, whom police described as a convicted felon.

Police said that officers who arrived on the scene about 2:30 p.m. saw the first 15-year-old with a gun in his hand along with the other two suspects. As the officers approached, all three ran. The teen with the gun was arrested after a short foot chase, and a fully loaded 9mm handgun was recovered, police said.

Weatherspoon and the other teen were arrested a short time later, police said.

Murdered Body In Cal-Sag Identified

A body found in the Cal-Sag Channel in Blue Island on Monday has been identified as Kelvin Washington, authorities with the Illinois State Police said today.

Washington drowned, officials with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

But police officials are still investigating his death to determine what happened.

The body was discovered by a boater on Monday afternoon in the water near 132nd Street and Ashland Avenue, according to Blue Island Fire Chief Bob Copp. The fire department responded to the call which came in around 10:13 a.m. and helped retrieve the body, Copp said. But the investigation was turned over to Illinois State Police when they arrived, he said.

According to State Trooper Clare Pfotenhauer, Washington was identified on Wednesday by relatives. Pfotenhauer said she didn’t know the age of the man but believed he was born in 1985. She said Washington had been reported missing on April 22nd. Because he was reported missing in Chicago, the investigation has been turned over to the Chicago Police department, Pfotenhauer said.
