An off-duty Newark police officer was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting that also injured two civilians, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Friday morning.

The name of the officer has not been released.

But at an early-morning press conference, Mayor Cory Booker described the officer as a 45-year-old Newark resident and a 16-year veteran of the force.

The officer was shot by someone in a vehicle around 9:45 p.m. Thursday while he was getting a slice of pizza at a Texas Fried Chicken and Pizza restaurant in the city's South Ward. The car then sped away.

A man and a woman were also wounded and listed in stable condition at University Hospital.

"We are hurt," Booker said, adding a manhunt to find the killer was underway. "We are angry and we will find who is responsible."

More information is expected to be released later Friday morning.
