Two Seattle police squad cars collide on Capitol Hill Sunday

Two Seattle police squad cars responding to a request for help from the Washington State Patrol collided about noon Sunday at the intersection of 12th Avenue East and East John Streets.

The officers suffered minor injuries, though police Det. Jeff Kappel said one may have been taken to Harborview Medical Center for observation.

The officers were racing to assist a trooper who was wrestling with a suspect near a narrow stretch of Highway 520 near the Montlake Boulevard exit, said State Patrol spokeswoman Julie Startup.

The State Patrol had received several 911 calls about a pedestrian walking against traffic in the westbound lanes of 520. When the trooper arrived and tried placing the man in his patrol car, the two fought.

The trooper requested backup; the two Seattle police officers responded and drove into each other head-on.
