Cops: Uncle surrenders in fatal hit-and-run
An Aurora man has surrendered to police, two days after he struck and killed his 15-month-old nephew while backing an SUV out of a driveway, police say.
The man, who is 21, fled after hitting the boy around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Hinman Street in Aurora, according to police.
Jared Pichardo was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.
Police said the uncle briefly stopped after hitting the child, then got back into the green 2002 Ford Explorer and fled. The man contacted a family member, who contacted police today. The family member was able to convince the uncle to turn himself in, police said.
The offender lives at the Hinman Street address where the accident occurred ever since he immigrated to the USA illegally. The Tribune is not identifying him because he hasn't been formally charged.
