A woman unloading groceries Tuesday night by her Uptown home was robbed of a ring she told authorities was worth $124,000, Chicago police said this morning.The incident happened at about 11:40 p.m. in a gated parking lot just north of Lawrence Avenue on Winthrop Avenue, said Chicago Police Officer Robert Perez.
The woman was getting the bags of groceries from her car when a man approached her, grabbed her by the neck and demanded she turn over her belongings.
She dropped her purse, and the man took the ring -- described as a platinum 5-carat white diamond ring -- off her hand, Perez said.
The man then scaled over the fence and fled the scene down an alley, but left the purse behind. Police believe the only thing taken was the ring.
The man was described as a black male in his 40s with medium complexion, about 5-foot-5 and 170 pounds. He had some sort of unspecified "physical impairment" on his face, according to the police report. The man did not appear to be armed.
No one was in custody in the incident, and Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
