No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Files: Man killed trying to remove ducklings from I-294

A Naperville man attempting to help out a family of ducklings get off I-294 was killed when he was struck by a limousine Monday morning, according to Illinois State police officials.

Edward Gardner, 38, of the 1600 block of Lonsdale Avenue was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m. at Lutheran General Hospital according to a spokesman with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Gardner was traveling northbound on I-294 when he pulled over near Schiller Park when he saw a family of ducklings on the tollway, said Illinois State Police Sgt. Nick Hasan.

After he pulled over he got out of his car at about 9:30 a.m. and was attempting to help the ducklings off the road when he was struck by a limousine which was traveling at or below the speed limit, Hasan said.

Illinois State police are investigating the incident but no citations were issued to the driver of the limousine, Hasan said.
